NEWS OF THE DAY

What: Google officially rebranded its AI chatbot Bard as Gemini and launched major upgrades, including a new mobile app and access to its highly anticipated Ultra model.

Key points:

  • Bard is now being rebranded as Gemini, reflecting advancements and improvements in AI models, specifically the Gemini family of models.

  • Two new experiences are introduced: Gemini Advanced and a mobile app to enhance collaboration with Google AI.

  • Gemini Advanced provides access to Ultra 1.0, the most preferred chatbot in blind evaluations for complex tasks such as coding, logical reasoning, and creative collaboration.

  • Gemini Advanced offers longer and more detailed conversations, better contextual understanding, and capabilities like personalized tutoring, advanced coding assistance, and content generation for digital creators.

  • Gemini Advanced is part of the Google One AI Premium Plan, priced at $19.99/month, with a two-month free trial, offering the latest AI advancements, along with 2TB storage and integration with Google apps.

Noteworthy: Unurprising to those who follow us, Google is not using Gemini for it’s search engine, which is what we already spoke about in our article about how AI powered search will canibalize Google’s main product.

What: The risk for the labor market is that once these technologies and solution move up the maturity curve, more and more skills will be replaced. What if the demand for specific skill sets could be fulfilled effortlessly, akin to a click – “Skills as a Service” (SaaS)?

Key points:

  • Generative AI threatens jobs: It automates tasks, even complex ones, potentially replacing many skills previously considered irreplaceable.

  • Shifting labor mobility: Countries may need fewer skilled immigrants as AI fills skill gaps.

  • Education in flux: Focus may shift from specific STEM topics to broader analytical skills and adaptability.

  • STEM skills at risk: Automation might render some STEM skills obsolete, requiring continuous learning and upskilling.

Noteworthy: If generative AI can build a marketing plan and execute on it in one day, instead of months, why bother creating project plans and scheduling tasks in a way that make sense?
