NEWS OF THE DAY

Video made with OpenAI’s new Sora

What: OpenAI has unveiled a system that takes video generation to a whole new level. The demonstration showcased videos that could easily be mistaken for scenes lifted from a Hollywood movie.

Key points:

  • 🌐 Sora can simulate the physical world with astonishing precision and generate videos up to a minute long while maintaining visual quality.

  • 🎨 Sora's ability to harness the power of imagination, simulating the future and past, has implications for advancing autonomous technologies.

  • ⚠️ OpenAI acknowledges Sora's limitations in accurately simulating complex scenes and cause-and-effect instances.

  • 📽️ Sora is not publicly available yet, and OpenAI is carefully evaluating its capabilities and potential risks before wider release at the end of February.

Noteworthy: Much like humans envisioning possible scenarios when absorbing visual stimuli, Sora utilizes an internal world model to simulate the future and past. This will empower self-driving cars or autonomous robots to forecast or simulate scenarios to minimize risks and mitigate them before they happen.

EDITORIAL

What: We already spoke about how STEM will be challenged in the future as a skillset, even more as a choice for current students. We’ve only been a year into the AI revolution and companies are already replacing a lot of knowledge workers with AI being unpolished. Our article talks about direct replacement of jobs via AI personas, to further illustrate this point look at this news:

Magic announced a $117M raise led by former Github CEO Nat Friedman for its frontier-scale AI code models, seeking to build an ‘AI software engineer’.

Key points:

  • Generative AI threatens jobs: It automates tasks, even complex ones, potentially replacing many skills previously considered irreplaceable.

  • Shifting labor mobility: Countries may need fewer skilled immigrants as AI fills skill gaps.

  • Education in flux: Focus may shift from specific STEM topics to broader analytical skills and adaptability.

  • STEM skills at risk: Automation might render some STEM skills obsolete, requiring continuous learning and upskilling.

Noteworthy: With Sora, entertainment jobs will be displaced heavily in the next few years. Recently in California a study showed 62k jobs were under threat. We plan on doing a deep dive into how the labor market is pressured by AI with recent layoffs and what this means for individuals in trying to adapt. Stay tuned for future editorials.
